Casino Regulation: Second AGCO Fine in Less Than a Month for Great Canadian

Great Canadian Entertainment (GCE) has received its second fine in less than a month from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). This penalty was imposed for allegedly failing to prevent minors from accessing casinos in the Toronto area.

According to an AGCO statement, investigations revealed that in four separate incidents, minors allegedly managed to access the casino floors, with some even engaging in gambling. Two of these incidents occurred at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, while one was reported at each Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort.

The AGCO has issued $151,000 in penalties to GCE. A casino operator that receives a fine has the right to appeal to the Licence Appeal Tribunal, which operates independently of the AGCO.

$120K Fine Last Month

“Operators of casinos in Ontario are responsible for ensuring that minors do not have access to casino floors or participate in activities including slot machines or table games,” stated AGCO CEO and Registrar Dr. Karin Schnarr. “The AGCO will continue to supervise and hold all casino operators accountable for this critical responsibility.”

In Ontario, individuals under the age of 19 are prohibited from entering any gambling venue. AGCO regulations also demand that casino staff possess the essential skills and training to perform duties such as verifying patrons’ ages.

Last month, the AGCO imposed a CA$120,000 fine on Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto for failing to identify a cheating scheme involving dealer collusion at the establishment.

“We set ourselves to the highest standards of security and integrity across our 23 locations nationwide,” remarked Chuck Keeling, Great Canadian Entertainment’s Executive Vice President of External Relations and Business Development. “These events were self-reported, and we acknowledge the AGCO’s findings. We have taken corrective measures and remain devoted to upholding all regulatory prerequisites in the future.”
